The article argues that a college degree isn't necessary for many jobs. To me this is very surprising. It has always been assumed that college is the next step after high school. I have always thought a college degree is required to get a good job in today's tough economy. If a degree isn't necessary for many jobs then why would the majority of high school graduates go for their college degree? A degree makes you well rounded but the article did make a good point saying that a degree provides additional knowledge but not necessarily to help people succeed in their jobs. The college degree still gives you an edge over someone who doesn't have one. I agree when the article says the problem with degrees today is the expense. College tuition increases every year and many students take loans out that they will take many years to repay.
Plan B: Skip College
In this article they mention how the idea of college translates into a better job, higher earning and a happier life. Which is what I have always heard from my parents and teachers. However this article goes on to mention that skipping college might be a better choice for some students. Because of today's economic crisis some student's can not afford college financially while they claim others may unlikely to be successful in pursuing a degree/may not be ready to do so. Those students can have the opportunity to do a short-term vocational/ career training. I believe this is a great alternative for many students. They are still getting the skills they need for their jobs but in a cheaper way and shorter time. They also mention for many jobs a college degree is not necessary. That those who do apprenticeships are more in demand than college graduates. At first I always thought a bachelor degree is what you will need to obtain a job but after these articles I can see how apprenticeships can be just as successful as a bachelor degree. They complete their skills in a shorter time which is cheaper. Plus with so many students going to college getting all similar degrees it is leaving opportunities like apprenticeships open which in return is increasing the need for these careers.
The Job Market: Is a College Degree Worth Less?
According to the article a college degree in today's society is a birthright such as a driver's license. Which means almost everyone has a degree or is getting one. Which means it is not so special anymore. Which they believe means the piece of paper you have saying you have a degree doesn't mean much to employers anymore. The article also goes on to say although having a degree isn't as special as it use to be, the price to obtain that degree continues to increase as well as the unemployment rate. In order to have something special today you really have to go for your masters degree. I always knew that in today's society you have to be competitive to get a job, but as I think about what I just read and what I observed at school I feel everyone is doing the same. Everyone came to college to get a degree in hopes for a good job, everyone is trying to boost their resume by getting jobs, participating in clubs and sports. Today almost all of the things I mentioned are a must on a resume. So what can you do to really stand out? To be honest, yeah a degree may not be that special anymore but, I think you have to have a degree in order to get a decent job its almost expected.
